The Catholic Study Bible is a study edition of the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE), presented here in paperback. It combines the complete NABRE text and study notes with a book-by-book Reading Guide, essays, and sidebars by Catholic biblical scholars. It is designed for college and seminary students, clergy, Bible study groups, and general readers, from first-time readers of Scripture to experienced students who want a fuller understanding of the Bible within the Catholic tradition.
The Reading Guide is the core of the volume. It walks through Scripture book by book with references and background, including expanded coverage of biblical history and archaeology. In this edition, about one-third of the Reading Guide material is new, and the rest has been reviewed and revised by the original authors. Contributors include Donald Senior, Daniel J. Harrington, John J. Collins, Dianne Bergant, Pheme Perkins, and Luke Timothy Johnson. Introductory essays cover topics such as the Bible in Catholic life, Catholic interpretation of the Bible, the challenges of biblical translation, and the Bible in the Lectionary. The book also includes a 15-page glossary, complete Sunday and weekday Lectionary readings for the liturgical years, and 32 pages of full-color Oxford Bible Maps with a place-name index.
The NABRE translation reflects the work of nearly 100 scholars, translators, and editors, reviewed by a subcommittee of Catholic bishops. It includes the first update of the Old Testament since 1970 and a complete revision of the Psalms.
