Douay-Rheims Bible (Pocket size) - 5150

The Douay-Rheims Bible, Pocket Size, from Baronius Press is a compact, black leather-bound edition of the traditional English Catholic Bible translated from the Latin Vulgate. It reproduces the 1899 Challoner revision approved by Cardinal Gibbons, retypeset for easier reading. It includes Bishop Challoner's notes, 32 engravings, eleven color maps, a family register, and three papal encyclicals on Sacred Scripture. It is suited to Catholics who want the traditional Douay-Rheims text in a size they can bring to Mass, Eucharistic adoration, a retreat, or on travel.

This edition keeps the full content of the larger Baronius Douay-Rheims in a smaller, carry-along format. Its New Testament dates to 1582 at Rheims and its Old Testament to 1609 at Douay, so the translation predates the King James Version. Bishop Challoner's revision of 1749–1752 made the text more readable, and his notes appear throughout. The encyclicals included are Leo XIII's Providentissimus Deus, Benedict XV's Spiritus Paraclitus, and Pius XII's Divino Afflante Spiritu. The black leather cover has stitched edges, the pages are gold gilt, and two ribbon markers are attached.
