Each beautifully designed medal is stamped in heavy gauge bronze and finished in a heavy silver plating that is thick enough to be engraved. The medals are rubbed with a soft patina to give them the distinct 'Py look.'
In Catholic tradition there are many kinds of scapulars. The only one we will discuss is the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel In its origin as a practical garment, a scapular was a type of work apron, frequently used by monks, consisting of large pieces of cloth front and back joined over the shoulders with strips of cloth. It forms part of the habit of some religious orders including the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, the Carmelites. These eventually morphed into a cloth replication of the habit worn over the newer garb of the day. In time instead of using cloth which was uncomfortable, wore out fast, and the advent of making metal jewelery we started using metal products that contained the same images as those found on the original brown scapular. The most common of the scapular medals is one that contains at least the image of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and an Image of The Sacred Heart of Jesus derived from the brown scapular of the Carmelite tradition. A 1996 doctrinal statement approved by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments states that "Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel is bound to the history and spiritual values of the Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel and is expressed through the scapular. Thus, whoever receives the scapular becomes a member of the order and pledges him/herself to live according to its spirituality in accordance with the characteristics of his/her state in life." Over the centurys many Catholics have come believe the following: Whosoever dies wearing it shall not suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and pledge of peace."This medal was designed from a vision given to St. Simon Stock, a Carmelite Monk (1165-1265), from The Blessed Virgin Mary with the promise, that whomever died while wearing the scapular would never suffer the fires of hell. Over the centuries the medal has become any medal that has an image of Jesus and of Mary on the same medal. The most traditional have on one side an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and on the reverse side an image of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
